as taxis edge closer to obsolescence, I consider the taxi-driver as the city wanderer with a mental map no longer needed (i have never been in an uber in which siri’s voice did not guide us). specifically: the trope of the south asian taxi driver. the newly-immigrated as a guide to the american city, passengers wary of being cheated. I am interested in a desi cabbie as someone with spatial awareness and street knowledge, and who gained this knowledge by showing others around. how does los angeles spread out in the eyes of these drivers when they are no longer asked to give its residents, its guests, its laborers, its people a lift?
